Gestalt is an approach to counselling and psychotherapy that can be compared to a tree. It has its roots in psychoanalysis and character analysis, its trunk is phenomenology and existentialism and its branches reach up towards eastern philosophy and transpersonal understanding. The tree stands in a landscape of holism and field theory with which it is inextricably interlinked. At its heart is the central appreciation of being: Physis or the élan vital (Clarkson 1991,1997).
